S550 Mustang GT Build Guide: From Stock to 800+ WHP

The S550 Mustang GT's 5.0 Coyote V8 is a naturally aspirated powerhouse with a clear supercharger path to 800+ WHP. Covers bolt-ons, forced induction, and the manual vs auto debate.

Platform Overview

The 2015-2023 S550 Mustang GT is powered by Ford's 5.0-liter Coyote V8 — a dual-overhead-cam, naturally aspirated engine that makes 435-460 bhp from the factory depending on model year (Gen 2 Coyote in 2015-2017, Gen 3 in 2018-2023). On the dyno, expect 380-420 whp at the wheels.

The Coyote is one of the most mod-friendly V8 engines in production. Its modular architecture, high-revving nature (7,500 RPM redline), and massive aftermarket make it the backbone of American muscle car tuning. The S550 platform is available with a 6-speed manual (MT82/MT82-D4) or 10-speed automatic (10R80), and the transmission choice significantly affects the build path.

Stage 1: Tune Only

A tune on the naturally aspirated Coyote picks up +35-40 whp on 93 octane by optimizing ignition timing, cam phasing, and transmission shift points (on the 10R80 auto). The most popular tuning platforms are:

  • SCT BDX Performance Programmer ($399) — Current-gen handheld tuner with WiFi tune delivery. Loads custom tunes from Lund Racing, Palm Beach Dyno (PBD), 5 Star, or Bama. Custom tune purchased separately (~$150-$325).
  • HP Tuners MPVI3 + 4 Credits ($599) — Professional-grade laptop-based tuning interface. The platform of choice for Lund Racing, Palm Beach Dyno, and DRP Motorsports custom tunes.
  • Lund Racing RTD4 Bundle ($924) — The most popular all-in-one package for 2018-2023 GT. Includes RTD4 device plus Lund Racing custom calibration with 6 months of free revisions.

For a tune-only file, Palm Beach Dyno's NA Tuning Package ($219) is an aggressive max-power approach with 6 months of datalog reviews. Requires a separate tuning device.

Cost: $400-$925
Risk: Very low. The Coyote handles tune-only power effortlessly.
Expected power: 415-460 whp on 93 octane.

Stage 2: Full Bolt-On

NA bolt-ons on the Coyote add up to meaningful power when combined with a tune revision:

  • Cold air intake: The JLT Series 2 ($349) and PMAS N-MT14 ($349) are the community favorites, both with 120mm MAF housings. Tune required to unlock full gains. +15-20 whp with tune.
  • Long-tube headers: The single biggest NA power mod on the Coyote. Kooks, Stainless Works, and American Racing are the top brands. +25-40 whp with tune. Eliminates the restrictive factory manifolds.
  • Cat-back exhaust: Corsa, Borla, and MBRP are the popular choices. Primarily a sound mod — +5-10 whp.
  • Throttle body: A larger throttle body (VMP 87mm or equivalent) opens the airflow bottleneck at the intake manifold. +5-10 whp.

Full NA bolt-on with a custom tune on 93 octane puts the S550 GT at 445-490 whp. That is approximately 50-80 whp over stock — significant, but the Coyote's real power potential is unlocked with forced induction.

Cost: $2,500-$5,000
Risk: Low. The Coyote is extremely reliable at full NA bolt-on power levels.

Stage 3: Big Power

The S550 Mustang GT's path to serious power is forced induction — specifically a supercharger. The Coyote responds incredibly well to positive displacement superchargers:

  • Roush Phase 1/Phase 2: The most popular bolt-on supercharger kits. Phase 1 targets 700+ bhp, Phase 2 pushes higher. CARB-legal options available.
  • VMP Odin / VMP Gen 3R: High-end supercharger systems targeting 750-900+ whp. VMP is considered the gold standard for Coyote forced induction.
  • Whipple Gen 5: Twin-screw supercharger making excellent power with incredible heat management. 700-800+ whp on a standard kit.
  • ProCharger: Centrifugal supercharger option for those who prefer linear power delivery. Targets 650-750+ whp.

A supercharged S550 on a stock motor with supporting mods (fuel system, intercooler, tune) makes 650-800 whp depending on the blower and boost level. With forged internals, some builds push past 1,000 whp.

The other path is turbocharging, but it is less common on the Coyote due to the complexity of plumbing a twin-turbo system on a V8 with DOHC heads. Supercharging is the community-preferred path.

Cost: $7,000-$15,000 for the blower kit + supporting mods
Expected power: 650-800+ whp

Known Issues

  • MT82 manual transmission: The 2015-2017 MT82 is the weakest link in the S550 platform. It is known for notchy shifts, weak synchros, and gear engagement issues even at stock power. Above 500 whp, it becomes a serious liability. The 2018+ MT82-D4 is improved but still not strong. Many manual owners upgrade to a Tremec Magnum XL or T-56 swap for serious power.
  • 10R80 automatic strength: The 10-speed auto is surprisingly strong and handles 700-800+ whp with a TCM tune. For power builds, the 10R80 is genuinely the better transmission choice — it shifts faster, holds more power, and costs less to build.
  • Oil consumption on Gen 3 Coyote (2018+): Some Gen 3 Coyotes consume oil. Monitor levels regularly. An oil catch can helps reduce carbon buildup.
  • Spark plug blowout (rare): The Coyote uses a 2-valve-per-cylinder head with limited thread engagement for spark plugs. Thread inserts are available as a preventive measure.
  • Fuel system limitations: The stock fuel system runs lean above ~650 whp on a supercharged setup. Upgraded injectors, fuel pump, and a return-style fuel system are required for higher power levels.

Budget Breakdown

StageEstimated CostPower Target (93 oct)
Stage 1 (Tune Only)$400-$925415-460 whp
Stage 2 (NA FBO)$3,000-$5,500445-490 whp
Stage 3 (Supercharged)$8,000-$16,000650-800 whp
Stage 3 (SC + Built Motor)$18,000-$30,000+800-1,000+ whp

Recommended Build Order

  1. Custom tune — Lund Racing, PBD, or 5 Star on an SCT or HP Tuners device. Immediate improvement in power and drivability.
  2. Cold air intake — JLT or PMAS. Pairs with the tune for immediate gains.
  3. Long-tube headers — The single biggest NA power mod. Get a tune revision after install.
  4. Cat-back exhaust — Completes the exhaust and sounds incredible.
  5. Supercharger kit — When NA power is not enough. This is where the Coyote really comes alive.
  6. Supporting mods — Fuel system, heat exchanger, intercooler pump upgrade for the supercharger.
  7. Transmission upgrade — MT82 owners: budget for a Tremec swap. 10R80 owners: TCM tune.
  8. Built motor — For sustained 800+ whp reliability. Forged internals, head studs, upgraded oil pump gears.
